Audience: Healthcare Consultants
Tools Used: Articulate Rise 360, Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft ClipChamp, ChatGPT
Responsibilities: Instructional Design (action mapping, storyboarding, visual design, prototyping, authoring), eLearning Development
Situation:
Healthcare consultants who routinely handle protected health information (PHI) were at risk of noncompliance due to inconsistent knowledge of HIPAA regulations, especially outside of traditional hospital settings. The organization needed a concise yet engaging way to reinforce HIPAA requirements tailored to these unique workflows.
Task:
Design and develop an interactive e-learning course that would increase awareness and understanding of HIPAA compliance, reduce the risk of violations, and serve as an onboarding and refresher resource for healthcare consultants.
Action:
Using the ADDIE model, I approached this project with a clear focus on creating an engaging and accessible compliance experience tailored to the real-world challenges faced by healthcare consultants.
Result:
The course received positive feedback for its clear, engaging format and practical relevance. It became a required training for new healthcare consultants and was adopted into the organization’s annual compliance program.
ADDIE:
Analyze: I conducted a needs assessment to identify compliance gaps specific to healthcare consultants working outside of clinical settings. I gathered input from stakeholders and reviewed common HIPAA violations to align the course with real-world risks. Informed by adult learning theory, I focused on making the course relevant, problem-centered, and directly applicable to learners’ day-to-day roles.
Design: I outlined learning objectives rooted in Bloom’s Taxonomy and structured the course flow using Gagné’s Nine Events of Instruction to maximize engagement and retention. This included gaining attention with realistic, high-stakes scenarios, activating prior knowledge, providing guided practice through branching choices, and reinforcing takeaways with job aids. I also incorporated mnemonic devices to aid long-term recall and make the content more approachable.
Develop: I built the course in Rise 360 and Storyline 360, using branching logic to simulate real-life decision-making. Visuals and dialogue were carefully selected to reflect both the emotional weight and practical consequences of HIPAA violations. I designed a printable job aid summarizing key rules to support performance on the job.
Implement: The course was exported in SCORM format and optimized for deployment in a standard LMS. The modular, mobile-responsive design ensured accessibility for consultants who work in diverse environments.
Evaluate: I applied Kirkpatrick’s Evaluation Model by incorporating Level 1 (Reaction) and Level 2 (Learning) elements through embedded surveys and knowledge checks. Learner feedback and assessment data were used to refine pacing and clarify scenario logic, enhancing the overall effectiveness of the training.
